The incident occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities indicated that one theory under investigation suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.

Site of the Incident

Officials have been are examining the site, which is said to be in a southern district of the city.

Accounts indicate the explosion happened in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

History of Incidents

Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This new event echoes other high-profile incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a Ukrainian source earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of policy.

The war has witnessed clandestine operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
