Alexander Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in ATP World Tour Finals Showdown
Preamble
The inherent challenges of group stage tennis often result in by this stage of the ATP World Tour Finals we’re often left scratching our heads, scrambling about for a mathematical tool and attempting to calculate the mind-boggling qualification scenarios. But this evening's contest between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, fortunately, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the successful player secures a final four battle against Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the defeated player is eliminated.
Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the elite athlete is the more accomplished player, has previously won at this competition on two prior occasions and is ahead in their direct encounters six matches to three, winning both the games they've played on an covered hard surface.
Yet … this type of playing field on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed most of his championships, he is full of confidence after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on Wednesday and he took out the German in the US Championships third round in late summer. Furthermore, conditions are faster in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which works even more in AA’s benefit.
If the German player is reserved, like he was against Sinner, and the Canadian presses the European player with his powerful serves and bold strategy, it might very well be the young Canadian – the one-time phenom who was once in line before the Spanish and Italian stars to take over from the Big Three – who earns the dubious honour of competing with the global leader the next day.
Play begins: at about 8.30pm local time, 7:30 PM in the UK.
