The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever blocked the introduction for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that established the business with his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create this new flavor within an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company

The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders maintain how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism plus Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally created in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes and Future Plans

Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
