Chicago White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Deal.

In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of sixteen million for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for being named the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the deal. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth-ever player from Japan to suit up for the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a last-place season, finishing at the bottom in the division but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with fanning often, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the championship game against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying shot in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
