New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
