It: Welcome to Derry Releases Next Early on HBO Max

Audiences are thrilled for the Stephen King adaptation Welcome to Derry, which is receiving positive feedback and weaving in elements from additional King stories. Now, HBO announced that episode two will debut sooner than expected, scheduled ideally for Halloween.

Early Release Particulars

Kicking off on Halloween night at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, episode two of the Derry prequel will launch on HBO Max, ahead of its traditional TV airing. Future chapters of the series run will be released on the weekend on both HBO and its streaming arm, culminating in the season finale on December 14th.

Series Overview

Taking place within the world of King's It, Welcome to Derry draws from the original story while building upon the world realized by the It movie director in the recent movie adaptations. The original It focused on young characters battling terrifying threats, thus it's suitable that the series continues that tradition. Yet, the first installment of HBO’s Welcome to Derry proves it set out to increase the tension, providing even more intense scares than the movies and creating a brutal tone for the rest of the season.

Setting and Themes

Taking place in the 1960s, the program presents a fresh cast of grown-ups and kids living in a seemingly idyllic town concealing a dark secret. This place operates on a cruel, recurring cycle—one marked by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a terrifying being reappears once every three decades. While the series might appear like it leans too heavily to the movies on the surface, what differentiates the HBO Max series is its two-sided viewpoint—narrated via the perspectives of kids and grown-ups concurrently. The kids stay highly exposed to the entity's fear, but the adults aren’t spared facing their personal demons stemming from Derry’s deep-seated bigotry and covert otherworldly powers.

Episode 2 airs on Halloween at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
