New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key policy, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of focusing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
