The people of Israel observe second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace talks advance
Israelis have assembled across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Post-war governance of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive return no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester a participant explained: "We must do any agreement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the evening arrives, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional victims had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, health workers reported.
